PRODUCT TYPESpur Climbing Kit

The Beginners' Spur Climbing kit is a full set of gear for climbing on tree spikes. This gear is useful for removals or other jobs where the health of the tree is not a consideration. (Climbing with spurs punctures the protective layers of the tree, and damages it.)

We put this kit together with high-quality tree gear that balances features with affordability. There is more comfortable and fully-featured gear out there, but this is a solid starting package at an unbeatable price. You can get to work cutting trees, and upgrade your climbing gear as you increase your experience and skill.

A second point of connection is required when cutting in the tree. See our Complete Beginner's Tree Climbing Kit or use your own rope system to back up the spur kit.

What you Get:

The Tree Climbing Harness is one of the most important pieces of gear. A good harness keeps you comfortable and supported while working in the tree. For our Beginner's Tree Climbing Kits, we have chosen the Buck Stability saddle. This harness from Buckingham features a wide, padded sit sling and split-suspension forward Ds for your climbing system. Big D rings on the side make attaching your flipline easy. The molded back pad and seat sling provide support while cutting down weight. Quick-connect buckles in waist and legs make it easy to adjust for a perfect fit, and quick to take off and put on. The Buck Stability is a modern update of classic tree saddle design, at an affordable price.

If you would like to upgrade to a more modern design at a slightly higher price tag, we recommend the Arbo Master (SAD721M) as an affordable option, which has a rope bridge for better mobility. This or other harnesses may be substituted upon request.

Your Spur Climbing setup features Buckingham steel tree climbing spikes with shin cup pads. These pads have a rigid steel insert which can be shaped to the leg, and provides support and protection from the climber shank. The tree gaffs are 2 1/4" long. Pole gaffs (better for thin-barked trees or palms) may be substituted upon request.

Your tree climbing flipine is a Climb Right 5/8" x 12' wire-core flipline. This is the most common size, but we can substitute a shorter or longer flipline by request. The Climb Right flipline is made in the USA, with a wire core for rigidity when flipping up the tree. The eyes are made with a two-crimp process for a secure and durable connection. The steel rope clip has a swivel for ease of use, and is ANSI approved for supporting a climber.

The US Standard flipline adjuster is simple to use and engages the flipline when weighted. Lean forward and pull the flipline through to adjust length. An internal spring keeps the cam ready to engage.

The Carabiner used in the kit is the top-quality Pirate auto-locker made in the USA by Rock Exotica. This HMS (pear) shape carabiner is ideal for connecting your flipline adjuster, and has the standard Rock Exotica pull-down gate, which is easier to open one-handed or with gloves.

Gear Storage is provided by a large canvas gear bag which will fit the entire kit, and WesSpur line mug for stowing your throw line.

The Tree Climber's Companion, 3rd Edition gives you a handy reference and manual for tying knots, performing a pre-climb inspection, entering the tree, and much more.

It is the user's responsibility to gain adequate instruction in the use of all climbing equipment. Professional training is recommended.
